In the mid – 1930s, Mr. Hartley laid the foundations for what would become a Bendigo institution when he opened a modest boot and shoe repair shop at 107 View St. What began as a humble service quickly evolved as Mr. Hartley’s deep passion for hunting and fishing began to take centre stage. As word spread and the demand grew, his small workshop expanded into a trusted local hub for outdoor enthusiasts. Over time, the business shifted focus from repairs to supplying high quality gear and essentials to local farmers, hunters and anglers – earning a reputation for expertise, reliability and strong community roots.

Over the decades, the business changed hands and locations several times, each new chapter building on the strong foundations laid by Mr. Hartley. Despite the changes, its commitment to quality service and support for the local outdoor community remained unwavering.

In 2020, the next major turning point arrived when the business came under the ownership of Lucas Starick. With a strong reputation in the hunting and fishing community, Lucas had long dreamed of owning his own local business. When a “for sale” sign appeared in the window at Hartley’s, he seized the opportunity!

Taking over a well-established business comes with its challenges, but nothing could have prepared him for the chaos of the 2020 pandemic. Just three weeks after officially taking over the reins, the business was forced into lockdown. Despite the uncertainty, Lucas and the Hartley’s team persevered. Five years on, the store continues to thrive-a testament to their resilience, dedication and the strength of the community that supports them.

The team at Hartley’s is made up of passionate hunters and fishers who truly love and breath the lifestyle. Their genuine love for the outdoors is reflected in everything they do. Collectively, the staff bring over 100 years of hands-on knowledge and experience to the shop, creating an environment where customers feel understood, supported and confident in their purchases. It’s this wealth of expertise and personal service that keeps the locals coming back time and again.

Looking ahead, out mission remains clear; to continue offering expert service, trusted advice and the best gear for your next adventure. We’re also committed to deepening out connection to the community by hosting regular events, workshops and training sessions. Our goal is to be your one-stop shop for all things outdoors-from hunting and fishing gear, to permits, licensing and expert guidance.
